Facebook Allow Users to Vote on Changes
Now that Facebook is public, all sorts of changes will be happening. Some might even make Mark Zuckerburg cry in his sleep.
An Amendment to Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, under Section 13 Amendments:
If more than 7,000 users comment on the proposed change, we will also give you the opportunity to participate in a vote in which you will be provided alternatives. The vote shall be binding on us if more than 30% of all active registered users as of the date of the notice vote.
The decision to add this amendment is unclear, but I see a lot of damage in the future to Facebook’s business model. Not that users are stupid, but the majority rule isn’t always right. our-policy.org has a whole mess of changes they demand Facebook to make. I would encourage you to read it, and hopefully you roll your eyes or join the movement.
I personally don’t see any problem the way things are going with Facebook’s privacy policy. I realize it’s a free service, information data will be exchanged for the free service and Facebook is currently doing a great job keeping my data private. I don’t see pictures of myself in search engines. Friendster is the one to attack. I find almost all my data and pictures on websites like mylife.com which were originally on Friendster. That’s bad business. Even Myspace hasn’t done that yet.
Facebook has beat out the competition and they will have to make adjustments to ensure their stock holders make money. So maybe voting on changes could be a strategic move on Facebook’s part. Time will tell.
